Dolphins’ DE Cameron Wake moves to second in team history for sacks

Miami Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake has quietly put up one of the best careers in franchise and NFL history. On Sunday in their 28-25 victory over the Buffalo Bills, he cemented his place in the record books.

Wake finished the game with 1.5 sacks to move his career total with the Dolphins to 73. That makes him second in team history for sacks behind only Jason Taylor with 131. He managed to do this during a game in which his main focus was to stop the Bills explosive running attack.

“I personally like getting in there, getting a little dirty,” Wake said after holding the Bills to just 67 yards rushing. “I’ve always had that pit bull mentality. You don’t bring a Chihuahua to a dog fight. That’s the mentality you’ve got to have. It’s just man versus man. It’s my gap. I don’t care who’s going to be in there. I don’t care what you think. It’s mine, plain and simple. There’s no C+ in football. It’s pass-fail. I think every guy across the line, front and back end as well, that win it all mentality, where I’ve got to win my match up. And that’s the only way we’re going to stop a team. Again, I was excited about somebody coming in here and saying that they’re going to run the ball down our throat … yeah, not so.”

For Wake, it’s been a long road to get to this point. He went undrafted out of Penn State back in 2005 and was not originally given a shot in the NFL. After a very short stint with the Giants, he was forced to join the Canadian Football League to keep his career going.

The Dolphins gave him a chance though in 2009 and it’s been history ever since.
